WHAT IS PAINTBALL ?
In less than a decade, the sport of paintball has become recognised as one of the world’s most exciting sports. Paintball is played in over forty countries by millions of men and women of all ages and lifestyles.
Paintball is a combination of childhood “tag” and “hide and seek “, but is much more challenging and sophisticated. Although there are many different game formats, typically a group of players will divide into two teams to play “Capture the Flag”.
The number of players on each team can vary from four to five to as many as 500 a side, limited only by the size of the playing field. AQPS fields normally cater for teams around 15-20 per side.
The objective of the game is to go out and capture the other team’s flag while protecting your own. While you are trying to capture a flag, you also try to eliminate opposing players by tagging them with a paintball expelled by a special Co2 gas-powered paintgun. Paintballs are made of a brittle gelatin capsule filled with non toxic food colouring, sorbitol and glycol. The average quantity of paintballs fired in a full day of games is 500-700 paintballs.
Games usually have a time limit of 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the field and the number of players. Between games, players take a break to check their equipment, recount the thrills of victory and the usually funny agonies of defeat. Win or lose, everyone has a good time and there’s always the next game waiting for you.
Paintguns come in a variety of shapes and styles, powered by refillable 20oz C02 cylinders that supply hundreds of shots. A paintgun has a pump or semi automatic action. Paintguns range from simple to sophisticated, but what they all share in common is the limitation on their power and range. Even at maximum legal velocity a paintgun won’t hit hard enough to cause injury as long as the proper safety procedures are followed.
Referees on the fields start and stop games, enforce the rules of fair play, and control the sport’s safety. Reputable fields have a large staff of referees and run several games at the same time on different areas of their property coordinated by two-way radio. Paintball is also played in arenas for spectator enjoyment.
Paintball is a sport played by people from all professions and life styles. It is a sport where men and women compete equally, and where age is not dominated by youth. Physical strength and size are not as important as intelligence and determination.
